Modi Government Faces Rising Pressure as ‘Cockroach’ Protests Gain Momentum Across India

India Protests Intensify: Pressure Mounts on Modi Government as ‘Cockroach’ Movement Expands

Youth-Led Protests Shake Delhi Amid Police Crackdown and Political Showdown
Pressure is building on India’s central government as thousands of supporters of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) continue their protests in New Delhi, undeterred by heavy overnight rains and a strong police presence. The youth-driven movement, which is demanding sweeping education reforms and the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, gained significant momentum after top leaders from the opposition Congress party joined demonstrations in the capital.

The latest wave of protests comes in response to a controversial police crackdown earlier this week, where clashes left dozens of protesters and officers injured. Videos circulating online showed opposition leader Rahul Gandhi and several other lawmakers being detained and taken away in buses during demonstrations outside the prime minister’s residence. They were later released.

Earlier, tens of thousands of demonstrators had gathered in central Delhi following a call by the CJP to march toward Parliament as the monsoon session began. Police used batons and tear gas to disperse the crowd, escalating tensions further. Authorities also dismantled protest infrastructure at Jantar Mantar, the movement’s central hub, but protesters have refused to leave, continuing a 24/7 sit-in.

The unrest has drawn the attention of several senior political figures, including Arvind Kejriwal and Sharad Pawar, who visited the protest site in a show of solidarity.

Political Blame Game Deepens as Movement Gains Nationwide Support
As the protests grow, a political confrontation has unfolded between the government and opposition leaders. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi led a surprise march toward the prime minister’s residence, demanding the resignations of Education Minister Pradhan, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Gandhi accused the government of suppressing debate, claiming opposition leaders were not allowed to raise the issue in Parliament. He said attempts to initiate a formal discussion were blocked, signaling what he described as a lack of willingness from the government to address student concerns. Government officials have rejected these claims. Federal Minister Jitendra Singh stated that a discussion had been approved but accused the opposition of shifting demands and continuing protests for political gain.

In his first public response since the clashes, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan criticized the opposition for politicizing student issues. He said the government remains committed to delivering meaningful reforms and accountability, while accusing critics of creating disruption instead of pursuing constructive dialogue. Despite these statements, protesters have continued to demand Pradhan’s resignation, with no immediate response from CJP leaders to the minister’s remarks.

The CJP movement itself began as a satirical response to controversial remarks made earlier this year by India’s chief justice, who used the term “cockroach” while referring to unemployed youth entering journalism and activism. The comment sparked widespread backlash and ultimately inspired a broader protest movement.

What started as a fringe campaign has now evolved into a powerful symbol of youth dissatisfaction, drawing large crowds and sustained public attention. The movement gained further visibility when noted activist Sonam Wangchuk joined the protest and began an indefinite hunger strike in support of education reforms. He was later removed by police and hospitalized, where he continues his fast. Support for the protests is no longer limited to Delhi. Demonstrations have spread to major cities including Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru, signaling a wider wave of public dissent.

As the situation unfolds, the growing scale of protests and rising political tensions are turning this movement into one of the most significant challenges faced by the Modi government in recent years.
